New York: The appeals court of United States of America has upheld the conviction and 86-year prison verdict of a Pakistani neuroscientist Dr Aafia Siddiqui, the progress in this case was made on Monday.
The detainee was convicted on the allegation of shooting gun fires at FBI agents and soldiers after her arrest in Afghanistan.
Aafia Siddiqui was convicted by U.S. District Judge Richard Berman in September 2010 and her detention was widely criticized in Pakistan as the people considered it the violation of human rights and justice.
Meanwhile, Aafia’s attorneys have challenged the conviction and sentence on many grounds. They said the judge inappropriately allowed jurors to consider the wrinkled notes. ‘The judge should never have allowed Siddiqui to decide whether to take the stand,’ they argued.
However, the appeals court also supported Berman in finding that Siddiqui had deliberately launched an attack, and that terrorism sentencing requirements were applicable because of her willingness to harm Americans.
