Karachi: Jamaat e Islami Karachi Amir Muhammad Hussain Mehnati has said that social values and norms of the society have been crushed due to immature behavior of media particularly electronic. In a statement on Sunday, Mehnati urged PEMRA to get its code of conduct implemented and appealed society to boycott those stuff, presented in vulgar advertisements. He said that obscenity and vulgarity were being promoted in the society through a designed conspiracy just for the wasted interests of a part of corporate sector. He was of the view that the current trends and mode of media have made it impossible for a person to enjoy dramas and other programs along with family.
Meanwhile a day earlier, Mehnati chaired a meeting of representatives of various walks of life including journalists, lawyers, civil society and other for consultation over the issue of rising obscenity in media as PEMRA had asked JI Karachi Amir Mehnati, JI leader Qazi Hussain Ahmed and Justice (Rtd) Wajihuddin to participate in a meeting scheduled to be held on August 27 in Islamabad to decide the definition of obscenity and to form an appropriate code of conduct.
It is pertinent to mention here that Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had taken the notice of letters written by Mehnati, Ahmed and Wajihuddin to him and converted the letters into constitutional petition no 104\2012 under article 184 (3) of the constitution. CJP directed PEMRA to compile a comprehensive strategy to curb vulgarity and obscenity.
The meeting chaired by Mehnati expressed his grave concern over the issued and suggested that PEMRA should consult with ‘Islami Nazaryati Council’ to drive the definition of obscenity.
