Lahore: The words seventh largest mosque was inaugurated this Sunday in Bahria Town Lahore. Former president Asif Ali Zardari performed the inaugural ceremony of the Bahria Town Grand Jamia Masjid. The mosque is expected to become the hallmark of Bahria Town Lahore and the Bahria Town chairman Malik Riaz also hopes that it will become a symbol of Pakistan across the muslim world.
The Bahria Town mosque has been designed by Nayyar Ali Dada and draws inspiration from Mughal architecture which can be seen throughout the mosques theme. The Bahria Town Mosque Lahore features 21 domes of varying sizes and four minarets each 165 feet high. It is the largest mosque in Pakistan in terms of covered area and seventh largest in the world.
The Bahria Town mosque Lahore has the capacity to hold a total of 70,000 worshippers with the main hall capable of holding around 25,000. The interior of the mosque has also been designed with great care and expertise. The floors are marbled with specially made chandeliers and beautiful mosaic tiles. Approximately 4,000,000 specially crafted tiles from Multan were used to beautify the mosque.
The mosque was opened on the occasion of Eid Ul Azha and is expected to attract worshippers from all around the area. Allama Shamsul Arfeen has been given the duty of Imam at the mosque. A section of the mosque has been reserved for ladies while the basement will hold an art gallery and a religious school.
