The Bill to ban dowry and regulate the marriage expenses have been submitted in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Assembly which aims to minimize the cost of the marriage by taking legal steps.
The bill aims to remove the exploitative dowry practice, to decrease the burden from bride’s family and to make wedding a simple event as recommended in Islam. The bill was presented in the Assembly by a member of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) which:
- Bans the exchange of dowry
- Punished violators with 3 months jail & Rs. 200,000 fine
- Imposes a limit Rs. 75,000 on Valima expense
- Allows only beverages on Nikah & baraat
- Marriage event should end at 10 pm.
- Couple can only receive gifts of Rs. 10,000 only
