Scientists from University of Bath have developed smart bandages which changes colour indicating that infection is developing. It will enable doctors to know about the infection earlier which makes it possible to end the infection before becoming severe.
[junkie-alert style=”green”] Currently it takes at least 24 hours to know that infection have started and that too after removing bandages which takes time and causes pain. But now the infection can be diagnosed with smart bandages as soon as it starts. [/junkie-alert]
The clinical test have started of these smart bandages in different UK hospitals, after positive results soon these bandages will be available for patients.
Currently doctors prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection even if the infection is only suspected, smart bandages will also solve this problem and prevent the misuse of antibiotics which is causing viruses and bacterias to become antibiotic resistant.
The clinical trials will be carried in Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Queen Victoria Hospital, Bristol Royal Hospital and Southmead Hospital. The trial is being funded by Medical Research Council.
