Chechen war is a forgotten war of Russia which came under Russian occupation after a war in 1999 which killed at least 100,000 Muslims. The capital Grozny was completely destroyed by bombing and shelling after Russian army failed to advance.
This war was initiated by Russian President Boris Yeltsin in December 1994 and after two years of war Russian forces made an agreement and withdrew. This first Chechen war killed around 100,000-200,000 Chechens.
Second Chechen war was initiated in May 1999 which was before the end of Yeltsin’s second term but the massive bombing started in August. Russian forces used more bombing and shelling and systematically destroyed the cities and villages. After Putin become the Prime Minister the Chechen area saw a covert war of abductions and torture in which thousands went missing.
In the second war 40,000 people were killed in Grozny mostly civilians because of the bombardment, shelling and snipers attack.
Despite these killings Boris Yeltsin is considered as a democratic leader and a hero among western world.
