The “new” TiVo box is TiVo software on Directv hardware that was released three YEARS AGO. I had a couple of TiVos in the past and I absolutely loved the interface but when Directv went HD they stopped offering TiVo. No interface is good enough to watch SD and sacrifice HD. Now I’ve had a Directv DVR (with HD Directv UI) there’s nothing about the TiVo box that will be better – no new features – the only reason to switch would be the UI, for $199 up front plus an extra $5 per month, I don’t think so. Maybe they will get some new customers, but most existing Directv customers have no reason to switch. I predict the new TiVo will not be around for long unless they bring it up to date with the latest Directv DVR features.
Since we got the DVRs, we never watch anything live except sporting events. We added an external drive to the DVR, and now when we are ready to watch tv, we look at our recordings and choose. Up All Night, Amazing Race, CBS Sunday Morning, Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, The Good Wife, Biggest Loser, Parks and Recreation, The Office, American Idol, Survivor, Criminal Minds, 60 Minutes, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, The Mentalist, Project Runway, America’s Next Top Model, Intervention, Storage Wars, Antiques Roadshow, NOVA, Nature, 30 Rock, Who Do You Think You Are, Dateline, 20/20, 60 Minutes, The Firm, Smash, 48 Hours Mystery, Big Brother, and lots of movies.

DIRECTV’s DVR’s with TiVo software cannot compare to DISH’s DVR functionality with the Hopper. The Hopper was introduced at CES 2012, and it blew DIRECTV’s DVR functions out the water. This DVR has PrimeTime Anytime functions that allow your DVR to automatically record CBS, ABC, NBC and FOX channels in HD everyday. There is no need to set up any timers and those recordings stay recorded on the DVR’s hard drive for eight days. The Hopper has a 2 Terabyte hard drive and its PrimeTime Anytime feature does not take always for your recording limits. The Hopper can hold 250 hours of HD content and it can record up to six shows at once. I work for DISAH and I can tell you that the Hopper also comes with a remote locater and it is the faster satellite receive out with a 750 MHZ processor! I can’t wait for DISH to release the Hopper to the public.
