If you have ever used a brand of Qualcomm, you must know that their names are a bit confusing. There’s the MSM8260, the MSM855T, the MSM8930 and the OMGWTFBBQ. So are you sure which one do you have? Qualcomm wants to ease their nomenclature for brands and we can’t blame them for that.
They are making it extra ordinarily simple and they leave us wondering why they didn’t do it before. The company announced that they are beginning to name their chips with numbers which means that the names of the brands will be like S1, S2, S3, etc. The higher the number assigned to the chip, the higher will be the specs of the chip.
For example their S1 device will contain a processor of 1GHz CPU or lower such as the HTC Status etc. The S2 class chips will range from 1 GHz to 1.4 GHz in speed such as the Verizon’s Thunderbolt. S3 will be the name given to devices like Evo3d which have a processor speed ranging from 1.2GHz to 1.5GHz. The S4 however is yet to come but they have already assigned a processor speed range for this that is they will range from 1.6GHz to 2.5GHz. They may be announcing the S4 brands in the next year. Well this seems to be the perfect step as it makes things possible for those who want to remember these names specially for those who write a tech log. We appreciate Qualcomm in this step and hope that Qualcom will continue to assist its customers like this.
