The Higher Education Commission (HEC) released the rankings of the universities in Pakistan for 2014. According to the new rankings, the Quaid-e-Azam University has emerged as the top ranking universities of Pakistan under the general category. The second position has been taken by the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad and the third spot has been claimed by the University of Punjab.
Under the engineering category, the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has taken the top position, while the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) has taken the first position in the business education category. The Aga Khan University is the top ranking medical sciences university, while the National College of Arts (NCA) is the top ranking arts and Design University.

The chairman of HEC, Dr Mukhtar Ahmed stated that these rankings will help to keep a healthy competition n the education sector while also assisting the parents to select the universities for their children. The ranking criteria had been revised this year based on the feedback received from the stakeholders. The ranking process considered quality assurance, teaching quality, research, finance and facilities, social integration/community development factors.
The first HEC rankings were announced in 2006, the second in 2012 and the third in 2013. The latest ranking list has been upgraded to match the global practices.
