Islamabad: A recent statement was issued by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authorities in which they stated that the decision to close Afghanistan Mobile Networks roaming in Pakistan is under consideration. The recent terrorism activities involved the usage of Afghan Sims that provided roaming facilities in Pakistan.
Astonishingly, the PTA informed that they were oblivious of the matter as nobody informed them of such an issue before. The PTA officials said that but inspite of that they did come to know about the issue and were reviewing the problem. The local cellular companies have provided PTA with a list of afghan cellular operators who are providing roaming services in Pakistan.
It is an established fact that once the roaming services of Afghan Sims are banned in Pakistan, the Pakistani Sims will also not be able to continue their roaming services in Afghanistan. But according to a PTA official, it is easy to investigate an afghan number when it enters Pakistani territories and gets attached to Pakistani cellular networks. Once the roaming is closed, the calls will come directly from Afghan numbers that may be initiating from any village nearing the borders of Pakistan and Afghanistan. In this case it will be difficult to locate these numbers.
But the LEA officials dismissed such claims saying that in the recent terrorist activities, it was impossible to locate the afghan numbers even in the presence of roaming services. The terrorist activities can only be contained by banning roaming. The officials further urged that as in the case of India, telecommunication towers should also not be allowed on the Afghan boarders as well.
