Karachi has always been regarded as the commercial hub of Pakistan. Being Pakistan’s major port city, it witnesses the largest amount of business in the country and houses many industries. This has attracted many people from across Pakistan to come and settle here.
Karachi’s population is reported to have doubled in the short period of 15 years. This is due to a number of factors including rural-urban migration, decrease in mortality rates and lack of family management. This growth has created a huge burden on the city’s infrastructure and the development is failing to catch up.
A large number of residential projects and flats have been created in a short period without any proper planning to deal with the increasing housing demands. This has led to overflowing of the sewerage systems and shortages in the gas supplies to houses and industries.
The transport system has suffered the most with an exponential increase in vehicles clogging roads and polluting the environment. The widely advertised flyovers built in previous years are also struggling to meet demands and yet there are no plans for a viable public transport network which the city lacks. The city desperately needs the authorities to lay down proper expansion plans for the water system, sewage, power and transport infrastructure of the city to deal with the problem of population in Karachi.
