Muavin is the latest initiative by Media Matters for Democracy (MMfD) to support women who are facing online harassment. The app was launched to help such women in reporting such abuse.
The app was launched on Wednesday in a conference which was held in Marriott, Islamabad. Currently the app is only available for android users at google play store. The app allows user to create groups of their twitter & Facebook friends who will be alerted in case of sexual harassment, hate speech & violence. It also includes discussion forums for sharing your experiences.
The developers believe that women and other gender minorities are left alone in online abuse while the abusers usually work as group or team. With the help of Muavin the women facing such abuse will be able to get support & help.
Swedish Ambassador Ingrid Johansson was also present at the inauguration, she stressed for using technology to enable women for raising their voices.
Online abuse is a growing problem in Pakistan, according to Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) more than 3,000 cases were reported in 2014-15 and the numbers are growing by each passing year.
