Recent records released by the Delhi police have revealed that about 6 women are raped and about 14 are molested every day in the city, deeming the city as unsafe for women to wander about. This is a shameful aspect for the city of Delhi that has been hailed as the centre of development and progress. These records will prove as a blotch on the image of New Delhi. The police have claimed to have solved about 90% of these cases, but will this be a comfort for the rest living in Delhi?
According to the records, about 616 rapes and 1,336 molestation cases were registered between January and April, amounting to a 36% increase in the rape cases as compared to the 450cases that were registered last year. Molestations cases amounted to a 100 showing a similar rate of increase.
In 2013, a total of 1,559 rape and 3,347 molestation cases were registered as compared with 680 rape and 653 incidents of molestation in 2012. The rise in crime related to women has been attributed to the ‘zero tolerance policy’ of the police, stated Ashok Chand who is the additional commissioner of police.
Public protests against such incidents have urged the police to take more drastic measures, but the police justifies its failure in preventing such crimes by stating that most of the cases involved people known to the victims, which made prevention of such crimes even more difficult. Additional deputy commissioner Varsha Sharma stated that a special police unit for women and children was in place to deal with women related cases, while self defence classes for women were also arranged.
