Pakistan and India made an agreement which was brokered by World Bank regarding the rivers and water flow between Pakistan & India which is known as ‘Indus Water Treaty’. It is being observed that India is violating the Treaty causing problems.
This agreement dictated how much water will be used by which country, it also initiated a plan of diverting the flow of certain rivers.
Despite this agreement India has been building certain dams on different parts of Kashmir which is resulting in water shortage in Pakistan’s Chenab River. On several occasions it was observed that India released the water after heavy rains causing floods in Pakistan.
The Indus River Treaty gave exclusive usage of Jhelum, Chenab & Indus to Pakistan while Ravi, Beas, Sutlej were given to India. For the initial 10 years Pakistan after 1960 Pakistan was given rights to use Ravi, Beas & Sutlej because the canals of the other three rivers were under construction for which India also paid the cost.
