Formula milk is being promoted in Pakistan as being important for the healthy growth of children but in reality they are not required for infants and breastfeeding is medically proven to be healthier for babies.
World Health Organization (WHO) recommends parents that for 6 months no formula milk should be given to infant, in UK advertising for alternate milk intended for children younger than 6 months are illegal.
“WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of an infant’s life. Thereafter, local, nutritious foods should be introduced, while breastfeeding continues for up to two years or beyond. Follow up formula is therefore unnecessary. In addition, follow-up formula is not a suitable substitute for breast milk, due to its content”
Even after 6 months WHO prefers breastfeeding, formula milks for infants and are not necessary and should be avoided. Rather than having positive effect it can cause health issues because it contains more protein rather than iron, zinc, B vitamins & fatty acid which is against what WHO recommendations.
