Mumbai: United Nations today appointed Indian actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as the new international Goodwill Ambassador for UNAIDS, the joint UN programme on HIV and AIDS. This was announced at the UN headquarters in New York by UNAIDS executive director Michel Sidibe on the sidelines of the 67th UN General Assembly session.
Aishwarya will now work as an UN ambassador raising awareness about issues related to the eradication of new HIV infections in children.
“I am honored to accept the selection. Helping to raise awareness on health issues specially related to children and women has always been my main concern and now being a new mother I can personally relate to this — the joys and concerns of every mother and the hopes that we have for our children,” she said.
Her main focus will be to raise campaigns and advocate for the global plan towards the elimination of new HIV infections among children and to keep their mothers alive.
