Islamabad: About 547 prisoners are waiting for their death sentence that has been suspended as these prisoners have registered an appeal for mercy under the article 45. According to this article, if a prisoner registers an appeal for mercy, then the death sentence will stay suspended until a decision has been made on these appeals.
These prisoners were sentenced to death during the government of Asif Ali Zardari. Among these prisoners, 63 have a death sentence to their names on proof of their involvement in terrorist activities, while 484 prisoners have been awarded death in various murder cases.
The former president, Asif Ali Zardari had pardoned an Indian spy Sarabjit Singh and various other prisoners, who had been sentenced to death.[junkie-alert style=”white”]Unfortunately, this has not been done with the prisoners awarded death in the regime of Asif Ali Zardari and current president Mamnoon Hussain.[/junkie-alert]
These prisoners have successfully avoided their death sentence for a while taking advantage of the delay in the decisions. It is notified yet again that Pakistan has stopped further action on these death sentences under the continuous threats of sanctions from the European Union.
